Full Description
Cass Bay Games’ debut title, Davy Jones’ Deckhand is a roguelike deckbuilder that stands out from the crowd with its genuinely fresh combat, built around an exciting counter-attack system. It is also capturing the attention of players from outside the core deckbuilding crowd with its nostalgic, adventure tone, stunning hand-drawn art, and rich narrative elements.
Players take on the role of a deceased deckhand. Thomas Essex is a young, wide-eyed cabin boy, whose first voyage ends tragically. He finds himself in Davy Jones’ locker after being murdered by pirates during the tutorial.
But Davy offers a choice: join the other lost souls dragging his ship along the seabed for all eternity, or do Davy’s bidding and receive resurrection.
An epic adventure awaits. Davy needs someone on the surface where he can no longer go. He sends the player island-hopping from Madagascar to the Red Sea. First to face a sea witch and claim a one-of-a-kind compass. Then to a moving island that’s never in the same place twice. And finally to face off with Davy’s rival and the love of his life, the immortal Mary Read.
Five core voyages must be completed on behalf of Davy Jones. Each one is a difficult roguelike that must be completed in a single life by utilising the stance system and mastering counter-attacks.
Counter-attacks… in a deckbuilder? An innovative new combat system, centered around stances and perfect-parries, builds on established tropes to create a completely fresh experience. It’s so intuitive that players “click” by the end of their first run and are already excited about mastery and exploring the depths of the system. It is a true embodiment of “easy to learn, hard to master”, and immediately stands out to players as fresh, original and exciting.
Freely explore an open-ocean by surviving voyages. Players “pick their roguelike” by choosing a destination from the world map. A procedural voyage is then generated based on factors like distance, biome and narrative state. Either the player reaches their destination in one piece or dies trying! Failure means starting afresh and building a new deck from scratch, forcing players to adapt their strategy on each new attempt. Because of procedural randomisation, no voyage is ever the same twice. A successful voyage means arriving at a new location to explore with simple point-and-click controls.
Making landfall on islands affords the player an opportunity to meet traders, unlock items and discover new voyage destinations, and to strategically rearrange their cargo for the next voyage. These upgrades will give the player an edge, but only true mastery will see them through to the end of their quest and achieve ultimate freedom from Davy’s grasp.
Features
- Fresh spin on card combat - Counter-attacks reward risky last minute parries over tanky defense, making this game like nothing you’ve played before!
- Explore a limited open-world map - Navigate the world by surviving roguelike voyages. If you survive, you arrive. If you die, Davy Jones’ will resurrect you back to where you started the voyage to try again.
- Game changing loot - Plunder powerful artefacts that synergise with your custom deck to become an unstoppable terror of the seas.
- Discover new weapons - Each weapon comes with its own starter deck and unique stances, completely changing your playstyle.
- Endlessly replayable - From the biome you’re travelling through to the deck you build to the weapon you choose, you’ll never experience the same voyage twice. Explore NPC quests or complete gauntlets for an extra brutal challenge.

“Let me start off by saying I am awful at deck builders but I thoroughly enjoy them and Davy Jones' Deckhand is a stand out for me. The implementation of the Parrying system puts a whole new spin on deck building. Typically you're trying to carefully make use of your energy or just put tons of effort into DPS well.... That won't work (as easily) in this game your Parry Meter is your friend, your not-so-secret lover, and the supplier of your victory. Strategy takes front in center requiring you to weigh the cost of taking a bit of damage to make use of a counter attack (triggered by matching Parry meter to your enemies attack force). Picking your cards carefully and understanding your opponents is imperative. One overlook of options to play may result in you taking out one enemy but suffering big damage from another. Keep focus else Davy Jones is waiting for your return, and you better not be empty handed!”

“Love this game - have really enjoyed it so far and it's easy to sink a ton of hours into it. The parry mechanic is unique and really satisfying to pull off. Plus the artefact and card combos give you lots of depth to play around with. Really fun trying to go for huge amounts of strength or infinite healing. Lots of replayability. Great art style too. Highly recommend.”

“When I first heard about this game I was already interested but was dubious about the parry mechanic twist, I love Slay the Spire and I've seen plenty of deckbuilders not stick the landing Luckily I had the pleasure of playing the early access just before this demo launched and I was not disappointed The parry mechanic is such a welcome twist to the genre and as someone who usually loves just stacking block in games like this - I didn't think it'd be for me since it encourages the opposite The combos and setups you can do are not only fairly intuitive once you start to understand the mechanic, but also incredibly satisfying If you like games like Slay the Spire, Monster Train and Inscryption, give this a go, you won't regret it”

“Between the demo and the playtest I have around 30 hours of play. As the game sits it is an absolute deckbuilder/roguelike masterpiece. The art style is utterly fantastic, the gameplay loop and mechanics are well rounded and balanced. Cannot wait for the entire release.”

Checkpoint Gaming Highlight
“Davy Jones’ Deckhand uses a simple yet fascinating two-stance system that utilises parries as its main driving force.”
Kelly Byrne, DezDoes.com Top 5 Indies of PAX
“This one surprised me. I’m not always into deck builders, but the combat here feels sharp and rewarding. Pulling off a perfect parry and chaining counter-attacks is ridiculously satisfying. The art style pops, the UI is clean, and the fonts are easy to read, small detail, but it matters when you’re juggling cards mid-battle. It’s approachable too; you don’t need to be a card game veteran to enjoy it. I found myself thinking, ‘Just one more run,’ which is always a good sign. One of my favourite indie at PAX, and honestly, it deserves way more attention.”
Qualbert, Games from Across the Ditch
“Cass Bay Games are certainly playing their cards right with this debut title. Players familiar with the genre will be able to grasp the mechanics of Davy Jones’ Deckhand in a heartbeat. And while many aspects may seem similar to Slay the Spire, there’s plenty to set the combat apart. With a focus on guards/parries, players are rewarded for matching their defense exactly with the opponents’ attack, allowing you to return the damage with a powerful riposte.”
Explosion Network Preview
“The card-game genre can feel over-saturated at the moment and a bit harder to stand out in, which is why I was so pleased with Davy Jones’ Deckhand, which had me locked in as I did battle on the deck.”
Indieformer PAX Aus 2025 Indie Picks
“A deckbuilder where defense isn't optional - it's everything.”
Hooked Gamers Highlight
“With a narrative, mechanical and artistic design dripping over from the likes of Monkey Island, Captain Pugwash and Muppet Treasure Island; Davy Jones' Deckhand has you engaging in a deckbuilding swashbuckling adventure to duel pirates, knaves and ne'er-do-wells in counter-based combat.”
